The Origin of the Universe and the Existence of God.
While there may never be agreement as to the existence or non-existence of God, any such proof probably comes from study of the origin of the universe. For if one considers First Cause arguements, all events and causes must trace back to the first presence of matter in the universe. If The Universe has always existed, there is no first cause and hence no need for a creation. God is "unnecessary" in this case. If The universe has finite origin in time, then there is a First Cause. Where did the matter and energy come from that may have been infinitely compacted and compressed at the time of the Big Bang? If it was simply "called into being" than that would necessarily imply a being of infinite power capable of creating matter and energy at will. Therefore, all intellectual energy concerned with determining the existence of God should focus of the circumstances surrounding the origin of the universe.
