    7. Why whole milk for my one year old? - Top

Q: I was told to put my 1 yr. old on whole milk even though the rest of the family drinks low-fat milk; what is the reason for this?
A: We used to say that nutritional research had shown that between their 1st and 2nd birthdays, children need the extra fat in whole milk to grow properly and that after the 2nd birthday, their growth pattern and rate have slowed enough to not require the additional fat and we can become more fat conscious of long term affects of fat on their health Therefore, for the 1st year, we recommend breast milk Clot preference) or formula, the 2nd year whole milk , and then low-fat milk in all subsequent years.

However, in the past few years there has been increasing evidence that lower fat milks (2% or 1%) are just as healthy and may provide a better long term approach to fat intake.

So, we currently recommend 2% or 1% milk after 12 months of age. - Updated: June 5, 2010
