- Juice contains a great deal of sugar; both digestible sugars (glucose, sucrose, fructose) and non-digestible sugars (sorbital). During a diarrhea illness, yout child's gut has a decreased ability to absorb nutrients, and sugars in particular. So, those sugars stay in the gut where they draw water in to the gut by Osmosis. This produces more diarrhea. For this reason, beverages with less sugar are preferred, such as Pedialyte. - Updated: June 17, 2010
