9. NC passes Bike Helmet Law for Under 16 Riders - Top

The NC Senate PASSED the Bicycle Helmet Safety Law by a narrow margin (25-23) and now the bill goes to Governor Easley to sign. The law requires bicyclists under age 16 to wear a helmet effective October 1.
THANK YOU to everyone who contacted Senators - it made a difference. Senator Bill Purcell, retired pediatrician of Laurinburg, played a key role in getting this bill out of Committee and passed by leading the floor debate in the Senate. Dr. Tim Weiner, a pediatric surgeon at UNC was quoted in the Raleigh News and Observer after the first day of debate in the legislature.
