- O. With a 1 year old child now that they are eating some table food. How do you know if they are getting enough of what they need? Do you still need to supplement with baby food? J.B.
A. Children, presented with the option of the proper foods will get the right amounts and type unless they have some type of disease that prevents that from happening. Table foods (the right types) will provide as good of nutrition as baby foods and are a lot cheaper. The only special advice in for children between ages 1 and 2 years and they should receive whole milk because of the need for extra fat during that period. After 2 years they can receive low fat milk. Children go through periods of eating well and then other periods of not eating enough to keep a bird alive. The best way to follow a child for adequate nutrition is to follow their growth pattern by standard growth charts at their checkups, monitor them for anemia and follow their development. - Updated: March 23, 2001 -
