    5. I am concerned that my children does not drink enough fluids - Top

Q: As summer approaches, I am concerned that my children will not receive enough fluids; any suggestions?

A: Children generally will get enough fluids if they are available, but many times they get so involved in their play that they forget to stop and respond to their thirst. Hotter temperatures result in more body fluid losses, so their need is higher in the summer. Some suggestions are to

    1) have your child drink 8-10 oz. of fluids before outside activity,
    2) try to get them to drink some fluids every 15 to 20 minutes during activity and
    3) drink another 8 ounces after activity is complete.

These simple suggestions will greatly reduce any chance of excessive fluid imbalance due to the heat.
