- Q: My 14 year old son has a lump under one of his nipples; is this a problem?
A: Teenage boys can develop breast tissue on one or both sides when they go through puberty. This is referred to as Gynecomastia. This occurs because when they have an increase in the male hormones during this age, some will also produce small amounts of female hormones resulting in breast tissue development on one or both sides. Approximately 502. of teenage boys will develop Gynecomastia. The breast tissue is usually the size of a quarter and raised approximately 1J2 inch. They are tender when they bump this area. The breast tissue will last throughout puberty until age 18 to 21. These young men are not affected in any other way and are not less masculine then those who do not develop this. In very rare cases, the breast tissue can develop into a full blown breast and thin will require surgical removal, however this is very rare. - Updated: March 23, 2001 -
