Questions about types of antibiotics, when to use them, and side-effects of using them.

    15. Rocephin (Ceftriaxone) - Top

Rocephin is a commonly prescribed antibiotic given either IV (intravenous) or IM (intramuscular) for difficult to treat or serious infections. It has a wide range of uses including infections of the ears, nose, throat, chest, and urinary tract.

People that are allergic to Penicillin or Amoxicillin have a 10% chance of being allergic to Rocephin as well. Do not take Rocephin if you have had a previous allergic reaction to other "Cephalosporins" without asking your doctor.

The most common side effects of Rocephin are skin rash and diarrhea. If your child experiences diarrhea with Rocephin, try to work through it- cut out juices, and avoid fatty foods.

Rocephin, like any antibiotic, can take up to 3 days to work- please be patient unless your child is getting worse or new symptoms. - Updated: March 9, 2001
