- It is possible to have skin irritation from a protein allergy such as cow or soy allergy, but in most cases, newborn and infant facial rashes are from other causes.
Neonatal acne is a common problem in the first month, with acne-like pustules and bumps on the face. These go away if left alone. Many infants get bumpy rashes on the cheeks which may be from laying in their drool while they sleep. This may be helped with a skin moisturizer such as Eucerin lotion, and by playing an extra folded receiveing blanket under the baby's face in the crib to help wick away moisture.
There are very few "bad" facial rashes in babies. However any rash that looks like little blisters on a red base, or any crusted lesions should be discussed with a doctor. - Updated: June 3, 2001
