- A person's risk of skin cancer is related to their total exposure to sun over the years. We know that sun exposure and especially sunburn at an early age increases a person's risk for skin cancer.
For this reason, it is a good Idea to simply avoid direct sun exposure, especially in the first year whenever possible.
The AAP has now lifted any previous restrictions stated about use of sunsceen on infants. In general, I would avoid using sunscreen under 3 months as well as situations that would require sunscreen.
Any sunscreen used on children should be PABA-free. Use the highest SPF available, generally 30 or above. Reapply sunscreen after swimming. - Updated: March 10, 2001 -
