- Q: My cousin had scabies recently; what in this?
A: Scabies is a rash caused by the infection of the skin by a small microscopic mite that burrows into the skin. The body then has an allergic reaction to the mite resulting in a generalized rash that itches a great deal (leading to the old name: "the itch"). Scabies, when identified, is easily treated with anti-mite lotion that kills the mite but the itching which is due to the allergic reaction to the mite can persist for 10 - 14 days after the mite is killed. The mite can and usually is spread from person-to-person and sometimes from animal to person.
