    19. I just found out that my granddaughter has scoliosis - Top

Q: I just found out that my granddaughter has scoliosis; please explain what this means?

A: Scoliosis is a rotation of the spine that leads to the spine curving. There are two basis types. The first is congenital scoliosis which a child would be born with and is usually the result of an abnormality of the spine and can be very serious. This type fortunately is rare. The more common type in "idiopathic scoliosis" which occurs in one in ten teenagers (much more so in girls than boys). The majority of these cases are mild and result in no problems. These are commonly picked up by the pediatrician or in school screening programs. The mild curvatures only require monitoring by exam. The more advanced curves will need monitoring by an orthopedist and x-rays.
