    17. My son has nose bleeds; how should I handle them? - Top

Q: My son has nose bleeds; how should I handle them?

A: The proper way to stop a nose bleed is to pinch the soft part of the nose and hold it for 10 minutes. Keep your son’s head above his heart to slow the flow of blood to the nose. The head should be tilted forward to, avoid blood dripping down his throat and gagging him. Ice on the neck has little or no effect and do not place tissues or cotton in his nose since when removing them you will break the clot and the bleeding will start again. If your son has recurring nose bleeds, this should be evaluated for the cause because most of the time it is nothing serious, but there are simple treatments available.
