- 3. What is Molluscum Contagiosum? - Top
- Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is a viral infection of the skin, caused by a DNA poxvirus called the molluscum contagiosum virus.
It usually shows up as a cluster of small 2-3mm skin-colored bumps with a central dimple.
The lesions do go away but can take up to a year or more to do so.
If they are problematic, they are sometimes treated with antiviral creams or removal techniques.
Although viral, they are not particularly contagious. However in adults they sometimes appear in the genital area as a sexually transmitted disease. - Updated: June 4, 2010 -
