    25. My daughter is a Whiner. What can I do? - Top

A combination of ignoring the behavior, explaining on her level why it bothers you and responding positively to "nonwhining”. is the best approach. First explain to her how whining differs from normal speech and state you will listen and understand if she speaks clearly. Second, take deep breaths but keep your expression neutral while you do another activity (work. in kitchen, read paper, etc). Do not give off non-verbal cues (sighing, rolling eyes, eta). If you feel you are going to lose your temper, leave the room. Finally, pay extra attention to your daughter when she is communicating clearly. - Updated: March 22, 2001
