    34. How can I get my baby to sleep better? - Top

Sleep problems are among the most common complaints that parents have about their babies. These sleep irregularities can cause a lot of stress in the family and lead to a sleep-deprived household. There is hope, however. Here are some tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics book "Guide to Your CHild's Sleep".

Expose your baby to normal levels of noise during the day. Don't feel as though you have to whisper and tiptoe about. If your baby gets used to an extremely quiet environment, she may become overly sensitive to noise and waken to every little nighttime sound.

Open the blinds and let daylight enter your baby's room, even whe she's sleeping. Soon she will learn that it's easier to sleep at night, when it's darker and quieter.

Keep your baby during the day, playing. She'll be more likely to sleep at night if she has had an active day. However, do not try EXCESSIVELY to keep her awake- then she may get over-stimulated and be very unpleasant.

Establish a calming routine for bedtime: wash your baby's face and hands, dress her in comfortable clothes, and rock or cuddle her for a while. - Updated: March 8, 2001
