- Definition
A condition occurring in young children, characterized by impairment in social interactions and the development of restricted repetitive patterns of behavior.
Causes, Incidence and Risk Factors This disorder was labeled "Autistic Psychopathy" by Hans Asperger in 1944. The cause is unknown. There is a possible relation to autistic disorder (autism). The child with Asperger's disorder exhibits below-average nonverbal communication gestures, fails to develop peer relationships, has an inability to express pleasure in other people's happiness, and lacks social and emotional reciprocity.
Symptoms abnormal nonverbal communication gestures failure to develop peer relationships markedly impaired expression of pleasure in other people's happiness lack of social or emotional reciprocity inflexibility in adhereing to specific routines finger flapping, twisting or whole body movements preoccupation with parts of whole objects Signs And Tests Physical and emotional/mental evaluation are usually performed to rule out other causes.
Treatment Treatment depends on patient's level of adaptive functioning. A high IQ and high level of social skills will bring a better prognosis. For patients with severe impairment, treatment is similar to the treatment for autistic disorder.
