    15. My 6 month old premie is not rolling over yet. - Top

Q: My daughter is 6 months old and she was a premature. She is just now rolling over; should I be concerned?

A: Premature infants are at higher risk of developmental delays than non-premature babies. This is related to the premature birth of the brain and nervous system and injuries to this system that may occur because of their prematurity. Because of this, premature babies should be monitored for their developmental progression closely and appropriate therapy initiated if needed. In reference to your daughter, "rolling overt is a skill of the average 4 month old child, but may occur anywhere from 3 months to 5 months and still be within the acceptable range. The additional factor with a premature is what we refer to as the "adjusted ages of a premature. If a premature was born 2 months early, their adjusted ages would be 2 months younger than their actual age (if your daughter was born 2 months early, her adjusted age would be 4 months). Basically, we give premature babies the benefit of doubt on their development and count their development as starting on the day they should have been born.
