- 12. My 3 year old carries a ragged blanket everywhere - Top
- Q: My 3 year old son carries around a ragged blanket almost all the time; it is embarrassing. What should we dot D.F.
A: Between 12 months and 3 years of age, children go through a transition from complete dependence to one of independence. This is an important, but for some children, difficult transition. During thin time, some children feel more comfortable with what we call a "transitional object”. n This may be their blankie, their pacifier, or a stuffed animal. These are familiar things for them and help them feel more stable and relaxed as they go through times that make them uncomfortable. These times may include going to strange places, going to the doctor, going to sleep at night or going to day care. This is not an abnormal attachment and most children between 4 to 5 years will gradually give these objects up and move on. Generally, parents should not force the issue and as children get older, peer pressure will take care of things.
