    9. I’m concerned about my 9 month old daughter's hearing - Top

Q: I’m concerned about my 9 month old daughter's hearing; how can I know about her hearing?

A: In depth qualitative hearing ability is difficult to test at 9 months, but there are some indirect methods you can try with your child. When your child is alert and responsive, talk in a normal voice or ring a bell outside of her visual area and see if she responds with movement or searches for the origin of the sound. Also, by nine months of age, your daughter should be able to respond in appropriate ways to simple words such as Mommy, no and bye-bye. As she gets older, language development is an indirect measure of hearing with her saying a few words between 12 and is months, approximately 20 words at 18 months and seem after, some two word combinations and at two years, several two to three work combinations and many words used for communication of her needs.

Hearing loss can be a devastating problem but there are many helpful early interventions, so if you have any concerns, please speak to your child's doctor so he/she can evaluate her.

Currently, ALL babies born in North Carolina are screened for hearing loss at the hospital when they are born using a sophisticated electronic testing device.
