- Most children as they learn to talk between 18 months and 5 years will go through a period of what we call dysfluency. For most children this is stammering which is the repetitive use of the firms word in a statement and when they get pass this word they are able to complete the sentence. This is a normal finding in many children and will pass with time but parents should try to avoid correcting children during these episodes so they will not become self-conscious.
True stuttering occurs in about 1% of children and is the repetitions of sounds, syllables or phrases anywhere within a sentence or statement. There is commonly a family history but not always. These children become very self-conscious and tend to avoid talking.
If you feel your child has any speech problem, you should speak with your child's physician so it can be identified as a normal dysfluency which will resolve or a real problem that may need therapy.
