- 8. Acne - Top
- Acne is a common problem during the teenage years, caused by inflammation of the oil glands primarily of the face. It occurs because of hormones released during these years. As with most skin problems, everyone has a varying degree of difficulty with acne.
Diet generally has been shown to have no major effect on acne, but everyone should attempt to maintain a well rounded diet. Clean skin is important but the excess use of soap or alcohol cleaning products can aggravate the problem. Therefore, reasonable daily cleansing with a mild soap and wash cloth is recommended. Excessive use of makeup can block the oil glands and aggravate the problem.
When teenagers get through their puberty, the acne problems generally clar up. Therefore, time will take care of the problem but teenagers are very concious of their appearance and if tehy are concerned they should be able to seek help from their physician who may be able to recommend a treatment that may minimize long term effects. - Updated: June 11, 2001 -
