- Vaginitis is an irritation or the vagina. The irritation can be caused by infection, physical causes such as constant rubbing by clothing, or chemical irritants such as soaps. Common causes today are bubble baths, harsh soaps, and tight fitting jeans. The child or adolescent will usually have itching, burning, and a a discharge different from the usual clear discharge.
Simple preventative mreasures are teaching to wipe from front to back, avoid bubble baths, use soap at the end of the bathing period, cotton underwear, remove swimming suits promptly, and avoid tight fitting pants.
If these measures do not prevent or improve the problem, contact your physician for advice or evaluation. - Updated: June 12, 2001
