    14. Teeth / Dental Care - Top

A major part of a child's health care is their dental care. Teeth are developing even before a baby is born and good nutrition during pregnancy is important. After birth, the baby should be on a flouride suppliment if they are not receiving water with adequate flouride in it, such as with breast feeding or local well water. If this is true for your child, please contact your physician.

As soon as teeth start emerging, they should be cleansed with a soft cloth and later the child should become familiar with a toothbrush and its use. At approximately 2-3 years of age, a child should begin seeing a dentist who is gentle with children, to initiate regular dental care without fear.

One major cause of dental cavities in young children is allowing tbem to sleep with a bottle in their mouth. This provides sugar for bacteria to rapidly destroy the teeth's enamel. - Updated: June 6, 2001
